Things went horribly wrong. It was a real mess. We tried to {compensate|mitigate the situation, but it was like trying to stop a blizzard with a teaspoon. We're still picking up the pieces and feeling the sting of this epic fail.

This problem has spiraled out of control. It's a total fiasco. We've tried everything to fix it, but nothing seems to be effective. At this point, it feels like we're toast. Honestly, I don't know what else to do. This is a nightmare of epic proportions.
This is So Bad, It's Funny (Not Really)
Sometimes you find yourself face-to-face with situations so horrifically bad that you can't help but burst out chuckling. It's like your brain tries to make sense of the sheer level of destruction and just throws its hands up, opting for laughter as a coping mechanism.
But then, you suddenly become aware that it's not really funny. It's just plain horrifyingly awful. And the laughter you were experiencing morphs into a wistful, melancholic sound.
In the end, you are left with a sense of confusion. You wonder about the purpose of it all. Was this a joke?
Or were we just all part of a grand, cosmic prank?
Tragedy of Epic Proportions
The tsunami struck suddenly, consuming entire towns in its wake. Buildings shattered like sandcastles, and the chaos that erupted was deafening. Thousands were left beneath wreckage, their fate unknown. The severity of the disaster was unprecedented, forcing survivors to grapple a future forever altered.
Rescue teams sprang into action, battling against time and dangerous conditions to locate those still alive. The nations watched in horror as the full extent of the disaster became apparent, offering condolences to the afflicted population.
Worst Day Ever
It all started with my case of uncontrollable hair. I couldn't make it to look presentable. As I was getting ready out the door, I fell and gracefully all over my new shoes. To make matters worse, I was extremely behind schedule for school.
I with no time to spare. My {boss|teacher|was absolutely furious. I attempted to explain, but it was pointless.
The rest of the day here was just as bad. was a catastrophe. I stay awake.
By the time I got home, I was exhausted. This day, this terrible day will be forever remembered as a day to forget.

It all started out terribly with a simple mishap/incident/screw-up. But then it went from bad to absolutely terrible. A series/chain/cascade of unfortunate/awful/disastrous events unfolded/occurred/piled on top each other, leaving me feeling like I was in a nightmare/horror movie/comedy of errors. It's the kind of situation where you just want to run away and hide.
